My Thunderbird address book will not allow me to add or delete contacts

I currently have about 140 contacts in my Thunderbird address book. When I delete a contact, it disappears, but comes back when I restart Thunderbird the next time. Also, it will not allow me to change information in a contact, and, also, when I add a new contact, it disappears when the program is turned off.
