Most recent version of Adobe Flash not working with Firefox

Since Adobe Flash has been updated it no longer works in Firefox. It is not listed at all under add-ons or when searching for new add-ons. It works in Internet Explorer however. I am currently running Windows 8.1 (I reverted back to 8.1 from Windows 10 as 10 seemed to cause many more issues).

I've already tried a number of things (such as uninstalling and re-installing), and I definitely installed the correct version for my requirements. I have tried installing an older version of flash, but my computer won't let me, saying it is unsupported and I must install the most recent version. I have lost track of all the things I have tried. I have not tried using Firefox Nightly (64-bit) because I am nervous to do so given my lack of IT aptitude.

Internet Explorer uses its own version of Flash - ActiveX. Firefox needs the Plugin version of Flash.

Download the latest Flash Plugin version from here: Select the Windows > Plugin-based browsers - the EXE version. https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html

This hasn't worked I'm afraid. Not sure if this is relevant, but just after the installation I get a pop-up from my anti-virus/internet security software (Kaspersky) saying something about it preventing Adobe from changing settings in Firefox. As this happened before, I quickly clicked on the link on this pop up saying 'always allow' but it doesn't seem to fix the issue. I can't seem to find any settings relating to this in Kaspersky. I'm not sure if this is an issue with Kaspersky, or something else, or how to check. I already have many problems with Kaspersky and am involved in long-term dialogue with their support team for another issue, so I am praying it isn't something to do with them, because I'm pretty much fed up with that program! Any ideas as to how I can check this?

Update: I've just realised, there has been some improvement - now when I look up add-ons in Firefox, Flash is now listed! The only question now is why it isn't actually working...

Further update: I restarted Firefox again and now it seems to be working! The only issue now is that for some reason since fixing it my computer is making strange noises, as if it is downloading something or trying to complete a task. When I look in task manager there isn't anything unexpected open from what I can tell. Any ideas why this could be?

Unfortunately...

I've realised the problem isn't actually completely fixed - though flash is now working on BBC iPlayer, it isn't working on channel4 OD, or on the Adobe Flash plugin test page.
