Can you limit what is added to the New Tab page of thumbnails?

Lately Firefox has started adding thumbnails of every page I visit to the new tab page. It's not pinning them, so I assume after a certain number they will roll off to be replaced by others, but I am trying to find out if it can be stopped. I like having my often visited sites there, but I don't want every page that I ever visit to show up. Can this be stopped, or is it an all or nothing thing? Thanks.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/about-tiles-new-tab By default it displays your most frequently and recently visited sites in your browsing history .

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-new-tab-page You can "Pin" and "Remove" sites, and add sites from your bookmarks.

Or you can do as many of us have done, use an extension to modify how the new Tab page works. I use this one which gives me a background image and allows me to set the sites I want to see. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools/

I'll try the addon. Thanks. It used to just show frequently visited sites, but lately it's been showing every page I've visited, even if it's the first and only time. I think Firefox needs to build in more controls.
