When deleting messages after viewing them thunderbird pops up message that it failed and then relist email back into my in-box,it seems it has been getting worse lately as it worked ok for a good while. I have not changed or added anything.

Try to rebuild the index file of the troubled folder. Right-click the folder - Properties - Repair Folder

How do I find the troubled folder?

The one you have problems deleting messages.

Still having problem, not quite as bad tho. Seems like the process is slow and that I have to wait for it to delete an email before I delete the next email.

What is your anti-virus software?

Had AVG free ,now have Kaspersky . Still have problem after opening email and if deleting too fast after deleting the prior email the program can't keep up and reloads it back to inbox.

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode

Does the problem go away?

Tried it and it worked,BUT! I only had a few emails to delete and I had already opened them and tried to fast delete them and because it only has hiccup occasionally this is an incredible pain to do. So I guess I am going to have to put up with this unless somebody actually has a clue to what is wrong.

Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software, which is most likely the culprit.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

I have changed from free AVG to Kaspersky and had no change to problem ,I have now turned off outgoing scan. As I have stated before this happens when I open then delete messages and the program seems unable at times to be able to keep up.

As suggested above there are possibly other things you'd need to tweak in your anti-virus software. If in doubt ask in a Kaspersky forum.
