Since yesterday I haven't been able to get any pages to load. It will not load homepage and when I enter a web address it just displays an empty white page.

Firefox stopped responding yesterday but I cannot pinpoint any event that could have caused it. There were no error messages. It shows only a blank page with a New Tab and "Search or Enter Address". Since then, I uninstalled AVG Firewall ( I have the paid version of AVG Internet Security) to test. I made sure Firefox is allowed thru the firewall. I have ran AVG full scan, Malwarebytes and CCleaner multiple times which always came back clean. I have tried refreshing Firefox several times. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and AVG Antivirus multiple times. Each time I reinstalled Firefox I had to change the proxy settings back to "No Proxy". It still shows a blank white page. I have updated my Graphics driver as well. Where can I look next?

Thanks, Cliff

I'm not sure of the reason, but a number of Windows users whose installation was migrated from 32-bit Firefox to 64-bit Firefox have had problems with pages not loading. If you are not able to discover an explanation for the problem, you could try reinstalling 32-bit Firefox:

Hi,

  • Disable your security software to test.
  • Try performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Be sure to delete the Firefox installation folder as above.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

My homepage is set to google.com. Even when I type an address in the address bar it doesn't do anything, no "working" indicator or anything. There is no proxy. I disabled my AV to test and still, no change. I did a clean reinstall again, deleting the Mozilla folders and even my profiles folder. Cleaned registry with CCleaner before reinstall. Still, no change. I am using Google Chrome right now on the same computer. No problem with it.

If you send Firefox to a site "externally" will it load the page? Or is that also inoperable. What I mean is:

  • Call up Windows' Run dialog by holding down the Windows key and tapping the R key
  • Type or paste this command line and press Enter to execute it:

    firefox.exe -url "https://www.google.com/"

Will your Firefox display the Troubleshooting Information page? Usually you can call that up using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the "User Agent" field you should see an indication of whether it is 32-bit Firefox or 64-bit Firefox:

  • 32-bit: (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:56.0)
  • 64-bit: (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:56.0)

Thanks for your response. I tried the command line that you suggested. It opens firefox but it still just displays the white screen with "Search or enter address" in the address bar. I can open the Troubleshooting Information page using the menu button. Mine is 64-bit.

Thank you jscher2000! That worked like a charm. Don't understand it, but I'm back on my beloved firefox again. Thanks!
