how do I stop attachments from being saved to my desktop

When I open email attachments to see them, i.e. not saving them but just to view them, it saves them to my desktop. Is there any way to stop this from happening? I'm on an IMac running High Sierra Version 10.13.4.

Go to... Options-Attachments-Incoming and adjust the settings at the bottom of the page.
