will not open web links

Thunderbird will not open any links received in emails. Clicking on any type of link will not work; even right-clicking and selecting "go to link on Browser" does not work. Usually have to select link and copy into web browser and wait for link to load. Tried fixing account settings and that did not give any options for it. Please help.
