Preview of messages in Thunderbird

The message menu used to have a preview setting when right clicking a message but it has now disappeared. The F8 route opens the message which I want to avoid in case a message contains hacker code. The preview window was excellent to use for setting spam conditions in the tool box. I will switch to Outlook if there is no way of getting the safe preview window back.
