Bookmarks aren't showing in toolbar

Today after booting up my computer, I found that none of my bookmarks were appearing in the toolbar. They're still appearing in the bookmarks menu under "Bookmarks Toolbar," and "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is still where it should be in the Customize screen. I also confirmed that the toolbar is still marked as "Always Show." In fact, other items (such as the main bookmark menu itself) still show up on the toolbar. It's only all my bookmarks that are missing.

I've also tried:

  • Exiting and restarting Firefox
  • Turning settings on and off (i.e., setting the toolbar to "Never Show" and then turning it back)
  • Rebooting my computer

I hate when this happens, but thank you for checking all the important things.

Next step is to check for potential corruption in the database file that stores your bookmarks and history, and run some maintenance routines. Here's how you run the "Verify Integrity" diagnosis and repair function:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say that, or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.

That's what mine says at the top. Here's the full report:

That sounds healthy.

This is frustrating because I haven't seen anyone identify what else could cause this issue besides

(1) "Bookmarks Toolbar Container" control not being on the bar, or (2) Database corruption

One user said the next morning reboot fixed it, which doesn't fit any known theory.

In other threads when Verify Integrity didn't restore normal, users were advised to remove the Places database file (places.sqlite) as a last resort as described in the following article: Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message. At your next Firefox startup, your history will be lost, but Firefox should use your last automatic bookmarks backup to start building a new Places database.

I have the same problem and have been unable to find a solution.

Hi Miniskier

Could you please start a new thread for your question?

Then you can provide more information like your operating system and installed add-ons.
