Important update! On March 14, 2025, a critical root certificate in Firefox will expire. If you’re still using an older version (before Firefox 128 or ESR 115.13+), it’s crucial to update to Firefox 128 or newer to avoid issues with add-ons, DRM-protected content, and other features.

For full details, check out Update Firefox to prevent add-ons issues from root certificate expiration.

If you have questions about the update or need help with the process, this is the place to ask! Whether you’re just starting or you’ve already updated and want to share your experience, we’d love to hear from you.

Let’s come together, share tips, and ensure we’re all prepared. Drop your questions or insights below!

Hi plew29881

I would recommend taking a backup of your profile first (do this with Firefox completely closed) and then update following this guide - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-release. If you need a hand with this, please ask and we will do our best to help.

can this upcoming disastrous certificate armageddon disabling all addons caused by mozilla be circumvented by simply turning back system time to a "supported" year like 2024 while using firefox 56 and ff90 on mint?

To ahonx.n21: No answer to your post will be found here. Have you tried Reddit's Firefox groups? May find technical solution and like-minded users there. This page is a dead end for you.

ahonx.n21, can you please stop post bumping this thread like a stuck record player.

the only "comment" telling me to stop repeating my question. but noone is willing to ANSWER my question. what's the point of such a "support thread" when there is no support at all?

We have provided several answers to your question, all very much the same. I am sorry that they may not be the answer that you want, but such is the situation that you have found yourself in.

noone provided a answer to that question if it's possible to circumvent mozilla ceriticate apocalypse by turning back system time to a "supported" year like 2024... and also noone ever provided any anwser regarding other possibilities to circumvent mozilla apocalypse. there must be some solution for this, keeping good old loved addons active, not having to DOWNGRADE to ugly proton eye cancer and less functionality!

why had mozilla to introduce this certificate shenanigans anyway? this is by far the most USER-HOSTILE decision mozilla ever made!!! and mozilla made lots of of USER-HOSTILE decisions like that ugly proton eye cancer thingamajigs, just to name one other example... seriously, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?

There is no "certificate apocalypse". A certificate has been updated in Firefox and we are keen that everyone updates so that supported add-ons keep working.

If this was not done, add-ons for many people would stop working.

A "user-hostile" decision would have been to not do this. That work on this has been proceeding for months gives some indication of how much we are trying to help users through this.

Please can you be mindful of the Mozilla Community Participation Guidelines in this forum.

ahonix.n21 has ruined this thread with non-stop temper tantrum posts. We got it. You are unhappy. Hi-jacking this thread with rants is not a solution. Could the moderator start a new thread on the forum to address the actual question?

This question has been linked to from a central page to help users so setting up a new thread would be tricky. That said, should that user continue to hi-jack this thread to the detriment of others coming here for assistance, we may be left with little choice but to restrict their ability to post comments - something that I would like to give them the chance to avoid.

I have very serious question that has nothing to do with security certificates or add-ons.

I have a serious eye condition that makes it IMPOSSIBLE for me to use any other operating system besides Firefox for Windows 11. I'm very careful to stipulate that fact, because I can't even use Firefox on my Mac.

There's something wrong with my eyes that causes extreme pain, migraines and and eye strain within seconds of viewing the wrong kind of graphically rendered image. This includes certain websites (even through Firefox) anything rendered above 1080p, certain videos games, etc.. And when I say impossible, I mean impossible. It happens within 3 to 5 seconds of my eyes being exposed to the images and can last for days afterwards without being exposed to anything and taking incredibly strong pain relievers is the only thing that makes it stop in some cases. But that's after exposure without going back online.

So, for whatever reason, Firefox seems to be the only operating system that I am effectively able to use, regardless of the graphics rendering engine being shared by Sea Monkey and a few others in the Mozilla family of browsers, on my Windows 11 build which I also stopped updating. Because while I could use Edge for the first 6 months, Microsoft did an update and "something" changed in the UI. And that immediately added that browser to the long list of browsers I can't use now.

Edge is rendered using Blink, like Chrome and Opera and their derivatives, but while I could never use the others, on a lark I chose Edge and until that ONE update happened I was golden with it.

I'm saying all that to say this. I know that Firefox is rendered using Gecko and that isn't going to change when this update happens. But whatever is wrong with me is more nuanced than that. Because I could never use Sea Monkey or Waterfox at any point, even right now, as an alternative. And while I couldn't use Opera or Chromium or Chrome, I could use Edge until that one update. So, it's more than just the rendering engine.

My very serious question is this.

If I update my Firefox, before March 5th, 2025, will ANY CODING CHANGES be made to the UI at all that tweaks, changes alters or manipulates the way the images are rendered? I mean ANYTHING that could possibly change something?

I really need to know the answer to this, because if that happens there will be a 99% chance that I will no longer be able to use the internet in any capacity and that would destroy my ability to earn money and go online at all. Full stop.

I need a sincere and honest answer. Not a guess or a supposition on this. Because it will be the difference between me LITERALLY being able to use my computer or not. Check with whoever you need to to get a definitive answer, because once the update is made there will be no going back for me.

Thanks in advance.
