I just deleted the Browsing history to get rid of all the very old suggestions the URL makes. It doesnt help.

The URL bar shows automatically even pages I havent visited for a year. I think there is a lot of old stuff accumulating I want to get rid of. So, how to delete the browsing history so that also that naggy URL bar starts with a clear slate?

If those pages have a yellow star then that are bookmarks and you may need to remove that bookmark by opening that page in a tab and click the yellow star to edit the bookmark and click Remove to remove that bookmark.

If it is a history item then you can try to use "Forget About This Site" in the History sidebar after you have visited the site to get a new history entry.

My History is empty. Loads of previously visited URLS are shown that are not in my Bookmarks list and since I cleared the History: Where are they coming from? Why cant they be cleared. When I start typing a URL into the Location bar suggestions are made for sites even if I haven't visited in a coombs age.

The link didnt give any more insight into how to clear the "Visited URLS" list.

I also looked into the Firefox profile manager: Run....firefox.exe -profilemanager but that just opens a new Firefox window.

I don't know if this is the same thing, but I had the problem of clearing my history and the location bar would show URL's that I hadn't gone to in a long time. I think most of them had the yellow star to the right of the address which was supposed to mean they were bookmarks. However, I had never bookmarked these sites. My solution was to go to Bookmarks->Organize Bookmarks. Expand "Bookmarks Menu" on the left side and go to "Recently Bookmarked". In there I deleted everything that I didn't want as a bookmark. Now the sites no longer show up in the location bar. Hope that helps for you or someone.

Thanks for the thought. For me there is no yellow star and many of the long time not visited pages are also not in my bookmarks. Cor-el just gave me a link to an editor that edits the form history. That kind of editor should also exist to clean out the locationbar.

If you want to remove specific entries that show as history or bookmarks in the location bar drop down list then you can do that in the Library by using the search. You can either delete entries or use "Forget About This Site". Use the latter with caution. You do not need an extension to do that.

If you have problems with removing history items then see:

Cor-el, Thanks for the idea.

I do not have problems removing history items. I cleared my history and later everything history was gone, except for the recommendations in the locationbar.

I get a lot of URLs displayed as suggestions in my locationbar which: 1) I havent used in a year or more 2) which are not in my Bookmarks or my History.

Informations about URLs visited seem to clutter up somewhere and I havent found out how to delete them.

I also never ever subscribed to any page.
