why does a new tab open each time I click on a link ?

When I click on a link or highlighted area in a window to open to a brand new tab opens every time. why is this? I would like it to only happen when I right click and enter 'open in a new tab'

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
