When I use the search window in the top right hand corner of my browser window the google dropdown automatically redirects to duckduckgo. Bing, Alta Vista, etc do not redirect, only Google. I would like to block duckduckgo permanently from my browser, how do I do this?

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

I regularly update and scan using those programs but this behavior is unusual in the sense that the redirect happens intermittently; in fact pressing the refresh (magnifying glass) button several times in a row will often get me to Google instead of duckduckgo. After doing a complete scan, registry clean and reboot, the problem persists, random redirects to duckduckgo when trying to use google search.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Searches are redirected to another site

Check and tell if its working.

After following the steps in your answers (thank you for the replies) it appears to be a DNS problem. My ISP has yet to respond but I'm hopeful a solution can be found.
