thunderbird handing on emails with an attachement

This morning thunderbird just started hanging when I try to access an email with an attachment. I just get 'not responding' and end up shutting down. There's no problem accessing other emails or sending emails with attachments

Any pointers would be appreciated. I use Windows 8.1 with Windows Defender

Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Thanks for the reply. I realised that emails to other accounts were fine - so I managed to delete the problem emails - I needed to have an email before and after them so I could select across the 3 then deleted all 3 which worked fine. Since then, everything is working fine so it must have been a problem with the particular emails - rather than all attachments. Thanks for the reply. I'll try that if things to pear shaped again
