Why does email list fail to refresh?

Sometimes when I switch from one folder to another the email list fails to refresh. If I move the mouse over the list in the new folder it will refresh but not always completely. Image 1 shows the CAD email folder displayed BUT the "Input" folder below it is selected. Image 2 shows what happens when the mouse is moved over the email list in the "Input" folder!

I had some joy in disabling the hardware acceleration with this exact issue.

Tools menu (alt+T) > options > advanced> General in Thunderbird 38. Not using it yet, update.
