do not update firefox anymore
I have a Garmin GPS, and (have to) use their plugin twice a day, since Garmin refuses to update the plugin, I will refuse to update my browser. So FireFof 44 is completely and totally unusable with this signing sh*t, I want to forbid the software to update. Ever again. Is it enough to just go to settings, options, advanced, and tick "Never check for updates (not recommended: security risk)", or are you planning on Microsoft tricks by installing and updating software hat does not work even without my permission?
btw, can you tell from the tone of this question I am angry as hell? Yes? Good! I am angry as hell about this signing sh*t!

Firefox does not require plugins to be signed; it requires extensions to be signed. Does Garmin use an extension?
And as far as you can tell, all is well with your Firefox 43?
Firefox 43 is identical to Firefox 44 regarding extensions needing to be digitally signed by Mozilla. This article has more information: Add-on signing in Firefox.
If you are using unsigned extensions in Firefox 43, presumably you have implemented the following global workaround that works in Firefox 43-45:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste xpin and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the xpinstall.signatures.required preference to switch it from true to false
Accordingly, it seems that your fury is either misdirected (signing doesn't affect plugins) or premature (there is a workaround for unsigned extensions through Firefox 45).
Please feel free to return and complain about Firefox 46 when that is released and see whether any workarounds are available at that time. Until then, please update.

your answer is partly correct. I am mislead by plugins / addons. I am talking add-on: application/vnd-garmin.mygarmin (Garmin Device Web Control: mygarmin). Apologies.
But, your answer is incorrect as of v44. The xpinstall.signatures.required is no longer available in v44 acordidng to https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2015/12/29/compatibility-for-firefox-44/
a. Last link has been editied since I last looked. Problem solved. Up until v46 hits the internet, and I will be stuck on exactly the samp problem.

You can find the installation path of all plugins on the about:plugins page.
You can check the Flash player installation folder for multiple Flash player plugins and remove older version(s) of the plugin (NPSWF32) and possibly (re)install the latest Flash player.

- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
Each list has its own link in the left column of the page. After clicking that, the respective list will appear on the right. For all I know, Garmin has both a plugin and an extension. ??

I saw that, I have uninstalled flash player several times, but it is impossible to get rid of flash player 18. It just stays where it is, and (may I say: as usual), firefox manuals are not for stupid users like me. What I found is what I tried: un-install, re-install. Yet, it remains. Even better, when I switch it off, run the uninstaller a couple of times and re-install, flash player 20 is disabled. I have to manually enable it :(

If you check the about:plugins page, can you find the path to the older NPSWF32_18_etc.DLL file?
Try to delete the pluginreg.dat file in the Firefox Profile Folder and maybe addons.sqlite as well to reset the plugin registry databases.
