Thunderbird not responding ever since calendar was integrated into Thunderbird
Ever since I uploaded the Thunderbird with calendar integration, Thunderbird frequently hangs, the screen dims, and at the top in the title bar it says "Not responding." It has done this to me while I'm reading email or when I'm writing email. If I wait it out, it almost always starts working again. If I close the window and open it again, it seems like it almost always does the "not responding" error again, so I have grown to get used to this problem and I just let it hang. When it hangs, I can't use Thunderbird, and so this really interrupts my work flow. The wait could be several minutes long. I am using Thunderbird 38.06.00.
BTW, I really love the idea of calendar integration, and used it a bit when it first came out. But I've been avoiding it because of this not responding problem.

What is your anti-virus software?
Nothing fancy. I use Windows Defender.
Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/change-startup-settings-in-windows-10#v1h=tab01
Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Does the problem go away?
Sadly, I think that did make the problem go away. It is a pain to be in Safe Mode, so I couldn't use Thunderbird on and off all day like I usually do. Nevertheless, I used Thunderbird for close to an hour and not only did the "not responding" not happen once, but the program seemed quite responsive when I moved between emails, which I realize in retrospect is not usually the case.
So is there any way I can use Thunderbird in Dangerous Mode but have it be a bit more zippy?
I'd revert to Dangerous Mode, ;-) and re-enable add-ons one-by-one and see if you can isolate which (if any) is causing the slowness. For instance,
Tools|Add-ons|Extensions
Select Lightning, disable it.
Unfortunately it might be Lightning at fault; it has been known to cause slowness.
Did you also run Windows in safe mode?
While in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in normal mode.
If it behaves odd again, the problem is one of your add-ons. In that case continue as per Zenos' advice. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1111942#answer-850840
If Thunderbird continues to work fine in normal mode while still running Windows in safe mode the problem is most likely related to security and/or anti-virus software you run.
For the past week I've been running Windows in normal mode but with every add on disabled. It is hard to say if it is stalling less often, but it is certainly still hanging. It always recovers, but it isn't unusual for 1 or 2 or more minutes to pass when I can't read or continue writing my email. I use a different program, and return to Thunderbird, and can always continue where I left off.
Any advice?
The point was really to run Windows in safe mode.
