Firefox is not allowing me access to a secure website. Says insecure connection

Hello,

I have used firefox for over 4 years. It is now blocking my exchange email server. It says insecure connection. I connected this morning but then whicle on the site I then get blocked and an error message comes up saying insecure connection. I use Norton anti-virus software. I have shut down my computer, and firefox and restarted. It lets me access then the same problem occurs. I don't understand why it is happening. I am not a technical person so I need help understanding what to do to fix this.

ok I cleared the cookies as you suggested. I scanned the list but didn't see anything that referred to this site but emptied it anyway.

I also created a book mark for the login - the URL that you have above so I can click on that instead of a cache of the site. I then logged in again and it seems to let me in. But I had got this far before and then it booted me. So hopefully it won't this time.

thank you for helping me. I will post another message in a few hours to say it is still working and then close this.

FYI, in speaking with the email exchange provider, they said others have experienced this before using firefox and that after a bit of time "firefox resets" itself with their certificate and the problem goes away. I can't say I I understand why this happens unless Firefox makes changes to its software and it affects how it handles certificates. Can't say I understand this.

I can access other websites no problems.

I also called my exchange server provider who said they have a secure connection, there is nothing wrong with my email and it is firefox problem. I cannot access my email.

Does the error page have an "Advanced" button you can click for more technical detail on the reason for the error? if so, please copy/paste that description.

If it's not a page but a pop-up, could you provide a screen shot of it? This article has tips on capturing screenshots: How do I create a screenshot of my problem? Please cut out or blur any sensitive information before attaching the image file to a reply.

More generally:

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help, or does the same problem re-occur?

Did they say whether they have ever heard of this particular pattern before: everything is going fine and suddenly it stops working normally?

Could you check your Firefox connection setting:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options

In the left column, click "Advanced", and on the right side, select the "Network" mini-tab. Then click the "Settings" button.

The default of "Use system proxy settings" should piggyback on your Windows/IE LAN settings, but you also could try "No proxy".

If you're going to change this, because log out of mail first, or exit and start Firefox back up first, before logging into the site.

It did have an advanced button and this is what it said. I tried to paste the screen shot but I don't have the option to "paste" in this box.


mex06.emailsrvr.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for the following names: cp201-prod.do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com, disc201-prod.do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com, geover-prod.do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com, kv201-prod.do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN

Hmm, that's strange, when I hit the following URL the site has its own certificate and doesn't use one from another site:

https://mex06.emailsrvr.com/owa/auth/logon.aspx

Could you check the other things I mentioned (cache, cookies -- if possible, connection settings)?

Hmm, it's possible there are multiple entry points to the server and one of them has a bad certificate while all the others have good ones. That's very hard for end users to diagnose because those security and load balancing mechanisms are designed to be transparent to you, but it might explain the random nature of the problem.
