Please explain in detail what you did, including full path and exact file and directory names.

I replaced Thunderbird folder in the same path after formatting the machine. My friend suggested that your mails might have overritten and i won't get any mails. But my inbox size is 1.62 GB and i see only 71 mails in my inbox. I have mails everywhere but my old mails are missing in my inbox. Please help me out.

C:\Users\User1\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird

my inbox size is 1.62 GB

Please post a screenshot of the folder in Windows Explorer with the Inbox file visible.

As a general note, letting Inbox grow that big is asking for trouble. It is best practice to keep Inbox as clean as possible. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

Another possibility is that anti-virus software is messing with Thunderbird mail files. What is your anti-virus software?

I am using Symantec antivirus. Please find the screenshot attached to this reply. Thank you for sending me the link about how to use Thunderbird.

Can you confirm you're using 'Global Inbox'? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Global_Inbox

From your screenshot there are four Inbox files. Inbox Inbox3 Inbox4 Inbox6

They all do contain mail. Which is the one Thunderbird is actually using?

Basically the same goes for other files, e.g. Sent.

Why there are multiple Inbox files in the first place I don't know. My best guess is anti-virus software is involved, messing things up.

Make sure to exclude the Thunderbird profile directory from being scanned by the anti-virus on-demand scanner. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Multiple inboxes is due to reconfiguration of my mail box ( this procedure i use to do it before) . But this was working from one year but recently i restored like what i mentioned before, i faced the problem which i mentioned before. I will exclude Thunderbird from antivirus.

As said before, accumulating messages in Inbox like this is asking for trouble. Chances are anti-virus software already screwed the Inbox file and/or the corresponding Inbox.msf file.

Make sure you do have a current backup of the full Thunderbird profile.

Then try right-click Inbox - Properties - Repair Folder
