Toolbar in preview window ESR version 60.2 is missing.
Foxit Reader is my favourite PDF program. To be able to save and print from the preview window in Firefox (on the left hand upper side) I use the ESR channel. Till version 59.9 at the bottom of the preview window a toolbar appeared with which I could save or print the document. Since the upgrade to version 60.2, this toolbar does not appear (which was the fact when I used the standard version of Firefox). I want to downgrade to ESR 59.9 (though Mozilla does not recommend this) in order to have back the toolbar, but if I choose for this version (in the download history under 'options') the latest version remains. Secondly: Is there a way to retrieve the mentioned toolbar in ESR version 60.2?

Hi, actually the toolbar has been missing for a couple versions in regular releases, and no it is not. But there are Extensions : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/search/?platform=windows&q=Print
You can set Firefox to open PDFs in Foxit Reader instead of in a Firefox tab. Or you can use Firefox's built-in previewer and, if you want the extra capabilities of Foxit Reader for a particular PDF, use the little Download button on the PDF Viewer's toolbar to open it there.
For the first one, see this article and change Adobe to Foxit: Use Adobe Reader to view PDF files in Firefox.
For the second one, see the attached screenshot.
Thanks for the advice. Since Firefox does not support NPAPI plugins anymore, I could not print from the preview display of a document. The solution was to use the ESR channel. Till version 59.9 this worked fine. But since version 60.2 (ESR) it does not. I attach a screenshot of a document. Formerly, till version 59.9, when I moved the mouse over the bottom of the small window (the preview), a toolbar appeared with which I could print and save. But now the toolbar does not appear anymore, and it looks like I can even not downgrade to 59.9. To be sure: I am able to print, by setting Foxit Reader (9.0) as a default. But I prefer to use the preview setting.
Does somebody have the opportunity to have a look at my previous message (9/11/18)?
Firefox's built-in PDF viewer does not have a float-over toolbar. The print icon would be on the "overflow" menu (» icon in your screenshot) but that will print from Firefox's PDF-to-HTML conversion so I suggest you instead open the document in the stand-alone PDF reader of your choice using the download button (also on the overflow menu in your screenshot).
Thanks for your quick reply, which I fully understand. But: till version 59.9 of the ESR channel it worked (there was a toolbar on the preview window) and since version 60.2 the toolbar is absent. Is there a way to reset 59.9? Has the toolbar intentionally been deleted in 60.2?
There was never a floating toolbar in the built-in PDF Viewer. You probably were using a Foxit or Adobe plugin as your viewer before.
I believe your previous version was 52.9; the Extended Support Release was based on Firefox 52 before and now it is based on Firefox 60.
52 ESR was the last version that accepted plugins other than Flash. See: Why do Java, Silverlight, Adobe Acrobat and other plugins no longer work?
You might be right concerning the number of the version. And indeed, I remember there was a Foxit plugin. Anyhow, is there a way to replace the previous version (52.9)? In the download history in my computer, I see the previous installed versions, but it seems to be impossible to replace the present version by an older one. Furthermore: If ESR 52.9 would not work anymore, is there any reason then to maintain the ESR channel?
Firefox does like to auto-update so that you are not using a version with published security vulnerabilities.
Why ESR exists: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/
It is getting more strange. For using PDF files you can choose between:
- preview in Firefox
- Always ask
- Save file
- Foxit Reader 9.0 (because of my plugin)
- Use other
Without any understandable reason the situation is now that if I open a PDF file while I chose for Preview in Firefox, the window belonging to Ask Always appears, and not anymore the document in a preview window. So, now I see no difference between Preview in Firefox and Ask Always. This change appeared before the update to 60.2.1esr.
Hi, please try a Refresh but Note that this does more than uninstalling and re-installing does. Normal uninstalling does not remove some preferences which may have become corrupt. Please Refresh but do this 1st:
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles
then
I executed the refreshment, but there is no improvement. Please, have a look at the attached images. Though I have chosen for 'use Foxit Reader (standard)', an empty small window appears (in which formerly the preview was showed) and a window appears in which I can choose between 'Open with' and 'save'. I marked the checkbox 'Do this from now always', but everytime this window is being opened; I cannot prevent that in any way.
Hi VictorQuint, I understand why the pop-up window appears, that is part of the website's design. What I don't understand is why the PDF download dialog appears. I wonder if this is somehow related to the site displaying the PDF in a frame instead of giving you a direct link to it?
Does Firefox follow the "open in Foxit" setting for PDFs from other sites?
Hello Jscher, Yes, if I check another website, the PDF file is being opened directly with Foxit. Maybe, the empty window is a part of the website of the bank. But, again, within that window formerly (version 52.9ESR) the document was shown, now it remains empty. And I still don't understand why the Firefox window appears, in which I must tell Firefox either to save or to print.
Hi VictorQuint, could you check something. Here are two links to the same PDF:
- Page that frames the PDF: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/framedpdf.html
Does the framed one have the same problem as the one you care about?
If I open from both links, there is no difference. In both cases the document appears and at the bottom the Foxit toolbar appears if I move the mouse over it. So, no difference between the two links.
Sorry, but I answered too quicky. I unintentionally opened the links with internet explorer, not with Mozilla Firefox. I will make a second trial.

Just to confirm, your setting is to open the PDFs outside of Firefox in the Foxit Reader application. So that is working seamlessly for both links with no download dialog?
In that case, my #1 theory about the bank using a frame is not the source of the problem. What could it be...
Now, I opened both links with Firefox. No difference between them. But also no Foxit toolbar on the bottom. This toolbar appeared after having opened the links with Internet Explorer. So, I still have the question: why did the Foxit toolbar disappear after the latest update of Firefox ESR?

Did the PDFs auto-open in Foxit Reader outside of Firefox?

Because the Foxit plugin does not run in any version of Firefox after 52.9.0esr.
