Reset to default

Several times over the past 3 weeks, Firefox has reset to default between uses. There were no updates installed, and I made no changes to the settings after changing them from the default. Specifically, Firefox reset my homepage to Bing, and reset my default search tool to Bing.

I want these resets to stop, and for my saved settings to remain. How can I accomplish this without either Mozilla support or Firefox changing it without my knowledge.

Hi Haldon, the default home page is a built-in page, and the default search engine is Google. Unless your Firefox imported those settings from Internet Explorer, they sound more like an attack than a reset.

To see whether your Firefox is harboring any problem add-ons, could you take a closer look:

You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove).

Any improvement?

You can search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in this support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

Hopefully that will flush anything on your system and in your Firefox that could be a problem.

P.S. Mozilla support only operates through this website. We can't change any settings in your Firefox. If you engaged with a remote support company pretending to be Mozilla, you can report them as trademark abusers and fraudsters. See: Avoid and report Mozilla tech support scams.

I have no extensions or add-ons installed. I am using Mozilla Firefox, which is why this both seemed strange and needed resolution. I will run a test, but if I uninstall Mozilla Firefox and do a clean re-install, should that also address the issue?
