How do I stop bookmarks from disappearing from Highlights?

I set the highlights section on the new tab page to show my bookmarks. Whenever I add a bookmark, it shows up in highlights for a while, but then disappears. How do I stop this from happening?

You can set via "Options/Preferences -> Home" (about:preferences#home) what kind of links you want to see under Highlights and other sections on the Firefox Home page (about:newtab and about:home).

I know that. I have set "Bookmarks" to be displayed under highlights, but nothing is being displayed. When I add a new bookmark, it is displayed there for a few days, and then it disappears.

From your description it looks that items under highlights are being replaced by other items after a few day.

Does this also happen when only Bookmarks are selected to appear there ?

A better way would be to pin bookmarks you want to keep visible to a tile under Top Sites. Websites pinned under top sites should stay until you remove them.

Only bookmarks are selected to appear under highlights. Nothing is actually being displayed under highlights.
