Tunderbird won't download my e-mails

As of (about) Dec. 2, 2020 Thunderbird won't download my e-mails from "gmail". I have a PC running Windows 10. I use NOD32 for antivirus. At about the same date there were Microsoft and Thunderbird updates. I can login to my gmail account and get the e-mails. When in Thundebird if I click on "get new messages", I get a message (in the lower left corner) "connected to 'e-mail address': Connected to imap.gmail.com..." Then nothing.
