need to set user ID and password for secure FTP site.
I would like to use firefox instead of IE. In IE, when I go to a secured FTP site (using ftp://blah.blah.blah) , I can right-click, and select the option "LOGIN AS", and proceed. I have looked but cannot find a comparable option in Firefox

The FireFTP add-on may be of use, it is a free FTP/SFTP client for Mozilla Firefox - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/fireftp/
If you only need read access then you can add the name to the URL:
You will be prompted for the password
