The go back/forward buttons have stopped working since a windows XP update.

Since a windows xp update the back & forward a page buttons have stopped working & are not highlighted, have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, going back to default appearance but nothing seems to work.

That can be caused if there is a problem with the file that stores history, for details see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
