the arrows top left are always greyed out, even if I click on a link I can't use the left arrow to go back. Something I need to turn on? Liked version 4 better than 5. Fast Dial no longer works?

Try:

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
