Why firefox uses about 30-40 % of the total memory of my computer?I am using Firefox 7 Beta 1.

I am using firefox 7 beta 1, the latest version, under Windows XP platform.I want to ask that why firefox is using most of the memory on my computer.Sometimes the system is halted due to high memory and CPU usage.I am also using Google Chrome but it uses lesser memory of my computer.
