After 8.0.1, Firefox continually asks to reboot, I reboot, and get same error message. No Firefox.

Upgraded to 8.0.1. A "Setup" error box drops down: "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now?" I reboot multiple times, and the box still appears. Went back to an earlier restore point in XP to delete the upgrade. It is still there. Tried to download the new version in IE, and will not allow it to go to the internet. I would like to use Firefox, but now only use IE, and cannot access my bookmarks, or any other programs.

Hi,

Please try deleting the updates.xml file in the Firefox installation folder.

Thank you for the comeback. Where would I find the updates.xml file? I went into Firefox menus and could not locate. If you can give an old timer some pretty specific directions, I would appreciate it.

The file is located inside the Firefox installation folder Mozilla Firefox. This folder would usually be inside the Program Files folder if Firefox was installed with the default options. If so you can browse to this folder - Program Files could be on any drive in My Computer but usually in the C drive. Alternatively you can type %programfiles% in the start menu Run... box and hit OK and look for the Mozilla Firefox folder, go inside it and delete the updates.xml file.

If the Mozilla Firefox folder is not located in Program Files, you can search for Mozilla Firefox from the start menu Search, choose All files and folders on the left, type Mozilla Firefox on the top left box and click Search. When the results appear, double-click on the said folder and delete the file if present.

I got into the Firefox files, and found a text reference to "updates.xml" in the "uninstall" folder, but can not find a file...only a text reference. I did a search on my computer for "updates.xml, to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks again.

It could be that the installation is broken. Please see this.

It would be a good idea to copy the entire Mozilla folder in %appdata% to another safe location and after the clean installation you can selectively copy back needed files. Some of the useful files could be places.sqlite file which stores the bookmarks and browsing history, formhistory.sqlite that has autocomplete entries and content-prefs.sqlite that stores zoom settings of individual sites. More about these files here.
