In the window that opens displays the history of today ... on the left so you have to choose the period that most interests you ... did you find?

Note if you have a particular tab open and it has a history you will have a pair of arrows < > top left on your navigation bar.

They give an option to go back or forward in the history of that particular tab, or if right clicked present a dropdown of the history allowing you to click on one of the History items.

ok i see the history window as you describe and the history for today yesterday and last 7 days and month and so on but how do i get the tabs to show in a new tab that is what i have been tring to do and i cant figure it out. thanks in advance clo312

As soon as you see the window where I put the photo you just choose the address to open and then click with the right mouse button .. you'll get a new window and the possibility to open it in a new window on firefox

If you right click on any link such as one in a post or on a forum you get the option to open as a new tab. From History the individual items alos give an option to open in a new tab.

Until you start going back and forward in a new tab; by clicking links; you will not have any history for that tab to use or display.

i am sorry i dont understand what you mean i used to get 6 or 9 different websites that would appear on my new tab just based on the websites i have gone to in the past and i could click on 1 of those and go to that site instead of always retyping the address it is quicker for me when i am always using the same sites thanksd clo312

Aha, I think there was a little confusion about the "frequently visited site" thumbnails and your full history.

The following method should work but please be aware that some extensions can override it (and a user.js file can revert it at the next startup). If you are having problems with the tab changing, those may need your attention (we can come back to those).

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and enter your preferred page:

(i) Page thumbnails (default) => about:newtab

(ii) Blank tab => about:blank

(iii) Built-in Firefox home page => about:home

(iv) Any other page => full URL to the page

Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?

See also this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag an item to a different tile to pin it to that position or you can remove a website by clicking the close X to block that URL.
You can drag a bookmark or history item and drop them in a tile on the about:newtab page to pin them and have your own favorites sites showing.

Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in the browser.newtabpage.pinned (default = [null]) and browser.newtabpage.blocked prefs that you can check/modify on the about:config page.

You set the number of rows and columns that appear on the about:newtab page by modifying these prefs on the about:config page via a double-click.

  • browser.newtabpage.columns (3)
  • browser.newtabpage.rows (3)

It seems it is the thumbnails within the page about:newtab that you are trying to change, as explained by cor-el's reply.
