Bookmark bugs in Firefox 29
Just wanted to point out a couple of issues with bookmarking in Firefox 29.
I usually use the "bookmarks" link on the menu bar. I prefer using the menu bar in general because it makes dozens of options available only 1 or 2 clicks away.
I was checking the new bookmark icons, the add bookmark star and the bookmark icon, and you apparently cannot permanently set it to always place bookmarks into "bookmarks menu". You can set it to do it using the drop down arrow but after a bit it will start placing bookmarks into "unsorted bookmarks". The bookmark link on the menu bar will always place bookmarks into the bookmarks menu once this is chosen.
Second issue is with the bookmarks from the bookmarks link on the menu bar themselves. Now, when you right click them, the choices available on the context menu are whitened and when you click them no action occurs. If you keep the bookmark icons active (you don't remove them via "customize") then you can get a working right click on all bookmarks. If you remove them as I do since I don't use them and use the bookmark link in the menu bar, then right click on the actual bookmark links yields a context menu that does not function.

Okay, I do see that problem in a new profile with none of my usual extensions.
It seems that after I use Customize a second time since starting Firefox, even without changing anything, the context menus for items on the Bookmarks menu are grayed. (Moving the star/bookmarks icon around can make it worse, but the bug exists even with it in its normal place.)
I think actually it is an old bug that hasn't been fixed yet: Bug 625778 – Contextual commands (such as Unable to delete/create bookmark) with right click does not work after a Customize. However, that discussion is a little hard to understand, so it could be something new.
If you want to raise the urgency, you can register on the Bugzilla site and "vote" for them to be fixed. However, it's generally not helpful to add "hurry up" comments. See:
Since it is inconvenient to exit and restart Firefox to clear this problem, the best workaround would be to use the Bookmarks Sidebar.

Btw, I notice that the add-on "classic them restorer" fixes the second issue with the bookmarks.
Hi teeness, good points:
(1) "Star" behavior vs. menu or shortcut behavior
This is similar to the difference between clicking the star in the address bar in Firefox 28 and earlier, which defaults to Unsorted Bookmarks, and using the menu or Ctrl+d, which I believe defaults to the last location where you saved a bookmark.
(2) Context menu grayed out
To understand this better, could you confirm/clarify: You moved the star/bookmarks buttons off the toolbar to somewhere else, and then used the Bookmarks menu on the classic menu bar (File, Edit, View...) and the items were grayed out on that menu?
Hi jscher2000.
I think it would be better if the star would allow you to set permanently (until user re-set) where you would like them to go. I like to default the bookmarks I have saved into the "bookmarks menu" as it is easier to see what I have saved right away after I click "bookmarks" and also easier to just drag them to whatever folder I want to from there. I would probably still prefer to use the Bookmarks that are a part of the Menu bar in any case as I prefer it all in one link and am used to it.
With the second issue - yes- that's right- with the context menu issue, if you want to see it, first activate the Menu Bar. Then remove the star bookmark thing via the hamburger menu/customize. Click bookmarks on the menu bar, find a bookmark and right click on it. The context menu will be kind of greyed/whitened yet the options offered will be selectable, yet, they do nothing.

If I install that add-on, it fixes the issue right away, in that the context menu will offer normal looking options and will function. When I remove the add-on, the issue remains fixed until I re-enabled the star bookmarks, then, right away the issue returns (right click on bookmarks under Menu bar/Bookmarks yield a non functioning context menu).

Ok, thanks. I'll probably just keep using the bookmarks from the menu bar as is and if I need to delete something for example with a right click I can just go into the "show all bookmarks" area and do it there. Also, that add-on seems to fix the issue so though I don't like using add-ons in general maybe I'll use it as it does make the browser look exactly like it was before which I prefer and the bookmarks work fine. That said, I think with this update the browser is now a little faster and a lot more stable so I like that.
I'll look into bugzilla - thanks!
Yeah you are right it's a customize issue. If I just click customize and exit, the issue happens. If i restart the browser, and leave customization alone, then the context menu is fine. So it's not really that big of a deal because I don't need to customize beyond the initial setup and very rarely after.
Thanks for your help.
