I cannot open the print preview in the latest versions of Thunderbird. A window pops up for a while and only the notification on the operation status bar remains.

That B1 means that you are not using a fully completed release version of Thunderbird. Beta software is by it's very nature a development version.
This bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1660739 indicates that there is work being done on a completely new print preview.
