why do I now get an error message "mailbox is at 82% quota" I did not have this until a few months ago and it is VERY limited I have used Thunderbird for many, many years without there ever being a quota

The quota is set by the mail provider, and it might be only 1 or 2 GB. Move messages to Local Folders to free up space on the mail server.
