Thunderbird is opening and handling attachments when I attach a file from within MS Word or any pdf reader. In Ashampoo PDF Pro it is the File:attach to email command, it opens Tbird. In Foxit Reader there is a dropdown to attach by email, also uses Tbird. With MSWord, File:Share:Email: send as attachment which again opens Tbird. Or the other opeion send as PDF. In every case, Tbird opens to fulfill the command.

Outlook is my default mail client, it is set that way in Settings:Default apps: Email set as 'Outlook'. Yet if I attach a .doc from within MS Word, it will open Thunderbird. I keep thunderbird on my computer as well as Outlook, I use Outlook most of the time unless it is having 'issues', so I like a fallback mail client. As well I have in Thunderbird other offline accounts that are no longer active and Thunderbird is perfect for keeping Local Folders for archival viewing of very old emails, so I don't want to uninstall Tbird. How can I 'stop Tbird from being enabled when I attach documents from external programs as in these cases?

In file type settings, for .eml as well, Outlook is set as the default client.

This is a Windows issue. I suggest you investigate the Default Apps in Windows and possibly the default for file suffixes.

Hi David. Unfortunately my full comment was not included visually. I'll include it here, making clear that I have certainly checked both Windows options you mentioned, included here for clarity:

In addition, there is not a single mention of Thunderbird in 'choose default apps by file type' catalog, nor in 'choose default apps by protocol'. thanks for any additional help, I don't want to uninstall TBird.
