Does the new beta 102 of Thunderbird get rid of the incessant "not responding" message in the current version. If not, is there a way to go back to an older version that doesn't have this issue? If not, what is the best replacement client for thunderbird?

Older versions have their own problems. And betas, as well. I have not ever, not ever, experienced the 'not responding' issue, so maybe it's not that common. Software is not perfect, so I encourage patience. If you're unhappy with Thunderbird, you might try Postbox; it's very similar, but it will cost you. If you post some information on what you're experiencing, someone here may have some useful suggestions. Please do.
