See the title for basically the entire problem. I had tried updating only the 32-bit one using the 32-bit installer but all it did was foul the x86 installation up and opened the 64-bit browser as usual. Now I'm stuck with an orphaned 32-bit FF which wont uninstall, update or remove itself from my Programs list. Ideas anyone? (If I try to open the 32-bit one I get error missing XPCOM).

Thanks so much. I finally found a dedicated 32-bit, up-to-date version that installed and actually upgraded the 32-bit enough at least to enable me to make it the default, then go back to my 64-bit one. I think at that juncture I'll stop meddling with Mother Mozilla and leave things be as they both work fine. Yes my 64-bit is also the latest 56.0.1 as the title mentioned. At least this now works and the only slight aberration is now I have 3 "Firefox" entries in Default Programs (Win 7 SP1 x64), which may or may not correct itself over time. We shall see. This all started because my A/V pointed out to me that "one" of my Firefox iterations needed updating. Thanks again, your solution would have been my ultimate solution.

All I got is my basic brutality instinct. Yank it out and delete then run CCleaner.

Or possibly find your previous version right down to all digits here: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/ and install the 32 bit and then uninstall. You are saying 32 bit one, 64 bit one well does not mention what version # is it 56 or ??? Any who 32bit installer is there. Install then see if it uninstalls or see if you now have 3 .

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

As a footnote, I did end up uninstalling the x86 version successfully. Somehow my Default Programs had 2 entries for x64 Firefox (listed, like the x86 ones, simply as Firefox, which makes life unnecessarily complicated), now also fixed. All's well that ends well. I have no idea how all this came about as I do not use registry cleaners of any kind,
