after update to firefox 57, google search suggestions don't work

google search suggestions don't show at all when I search from google search page (although it works from the search box on the address bar). "Show suggestions" is definitely selected, I have no add-ons and safe-mode doesn't fix it. I'm stumped.

I found the solution on google forum: I cleared cache and google.com cookies, and the problem disappeared.
