I want to increase the font size of the message list, as it is now very small and hard to read. I was told I had to download the newest version of Firefox, which I did. But I was still not allowed to add the add-on that will enable me to increase the font size of the message list. HELP!

Thunderbird has no dependence on Firefox. That was poor advice.
