In the upper right corner of the page there is a "gear" or "wheel" or "cog" button to open the settings panel for the page. The panel there allows 1-4 rows.

While you can add more rows through the back door, the method to do so is more obscure so let us know whether you need that.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste topSitesRows and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesRows preference to display an editing field, and change the value to 5 or whatever value you wish, then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change. I don't know the internal maximum for this setting.

Note that the interactive UI cannot display values other than 1, 2, 3 or 4.

Open a new tab>> Type in about:config in the address bar>> Click Accept the Risk and Continue>> Type in browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesRows >> Double-click the first one>>Type the number of rows you want

for the rows horizontal it does not work so mozilla-firefox is blocking this somehowe , however on the other side the columns maximum of 16 vertical does work properly , now what to do to get also the same amount of 16 rows horizontal ? do you know anybody who can fix this please ? i love firefox but slimjet is giving this option in the preference box !!! hope you have an answer to this .

16 rows (of 8 sites across) works for me. If you aren't getting 8 sites, you may need to zoom "out" (reduce the zoom). I don't think there is a way to get more than 8 site across.
