Ideally I would like to be able to drag and drop my emails out of Thunderbird and into project specific folders on windows explorer as I work on multiple projects at a time and it will make it easier to track messages.

Currently when I drag and drop I am creating a copy so the original file is still on Thunderbird. Is there a way I can adjust settings so once I drag the email to a Windows Explorer folder it is deleted from Thunderbird? I have rather unwieldly in and out boxes for various accounts.

Thanks so much.

The simplest approach would be to keep the messages within Thunderbird control, but not necessarily within the Thunderbird profile. One option would be to simply define the project folders within Local Folders. That would let you move messages to one of the project folders, yet they would still be within Thunderbird for backup and recovery purposes. OR, you could relocate Local Folders elsewhere. For example, if you have a folder on your PC called PROJECTS, with each project a subfolder, you could redefine Local Folders' root to be the PROJECTS folder. The work flow would be the same, except that the project emails would reside outside the profile.
