Hello! It seems like Firefox's behavior changed after the v116.0.1 update. If you're seeing a window from the previous session despite not having the "Open previous windows and tabs" option checked, don't worry. To resolve this, let's try a couple of steps. First, click on the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner, then choose "Options." In the "Home" section, make sure the "Homepage and new windows" option is selected. Next, if the issue persists, we can try refreshing Firefox. Just type "about:support" in the address bar, then click on "Refresh Firefox." This should help get things back to the way you prefer at startup. Let me know if that does the trick for you!

Make sure you close Firefox properly and give it enough time to finish before closing down the computer.

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox Title bar, especially if you have multiple windows or Private Browsing windows open to prevent losing tabs in unnoticed windows.

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit

On Windows, your tab session is restored automatically if Firefox was running during shutdown, unless you visit about:config in the address bar and change toolkit.winRegisterApplicationRestart to false.

It is also restored if the browser crashes (which could happen during shutdown) unless browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash is false. It is also restored when you restart the browser after an update.

It is best to quit the browser from the menu (Ctrl+Shift+Q) if you don't want the session to resume.

A PARTIAL "thanks" for your response:

1, First, click on the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner, then choose "Options." I chose "Settings" (there is no "Options")

2.In the "Home" section, make sure the "Homepage and new windows" option is selected That correct setting was there -- FOR THIS FIRST TIME N.B.: Firefox UPDATED itself -- before it booted.

This MAY have been what fixed the problem

3. type "about:support" in the address bar, then click on "Refresh Firefox." THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER "Refresh Firefox." would have REMOVED all my BOOKMARKS and EXTENSIONS!!!

A profile refresh removes many things including your extensions but not your bookmarks.

Thanks. But "change toolkit.winRegisterApplicationRestart to false." didn't solve the problem

None of the conditions you described applied:

  if Firefox was running during shutdown
  if the browser crashes
  when you restart the browser after an update

I have tried restarting Ff MANY times (since the update to v166.0.1 -- and then to v116.0.2! -- but Ff STILL RESTORES the previous session the next time I start it.

I've been using Ff since 2005; this is an unwelcome CHANGE

>>profile refresh removes many things including your extensions but not your bookmarks<< Still not acceptable!

Mozilla needs to fix this; not expect us to lose years of work

How do you usually restart Firefox? For example:

  • menu > Exit, then start using the shortcut
  • on the about:support page, using the Clear startup cache... button
  • on the about:profiles page, using the Restart normally... button

Is there a user.js file in your profile folder? If so, there will be a section on the Troubleshooting Information (about:support) page titled "user.js Preferences" with a link to view the file in a tab (after which Ctrl+U will show you the script source of the file). If that file has the following command, then Firefox will restore your previous session every time even if there is no other reason for it:

user_pref("browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once", true);
