I downladed firefox and chrome in the past. Then I was tricked into to downloading genieo.com. I got rid of all that and uninstalled genieo.com, firefox and google chrome. Success - my computer was back to normal - finally! Now weeks later I redownloaded Firefox and chrome and I see evidence that Genieo.com is in there. So I have uninstalled Firefox and Chrome for now. I don't want to see Genieo.com anywhere!

You really should not download anything from cnet aka download dot com as they are bundling unwanted adware along with legitimate programs.

Hi,

You're not alone: I found a bunch of people in the mac support forums having the same problem. Many of them seemed to successfully use these directions to remove Genieo completely.

Good luck!

Just a quick note, Mozilla and Firefox are NTO affiliated with Genieo in any way, shape or form.

Is the computer you are having trouble with a Windows Machine? If so, please do the following:

If you get a pop-up message asking to update Firefox or plugins then such a message is likely a scam and you should never respond to such an alert to avoid getting infected with malware.

  • Only update Firefox via "Help > About" or by downloading and installing Firefox from the Mozilla server and never via a pop-up or link on a web page.
  • Plugins should only be updated via the plugin itself or by visiting the home page of the plugin.

Thanks for all the responses. I fixed(I hope) by using free Malwarebytes downloaded through Cnet. Reinstalled Firefox and reset it in the safe mode. Emptied trash bin. Uninstalled files (in the past). I was advised to go to CNET and download Malwarebytes. First attempt sent me to a page full of adverts that had download on all of them and I, not knowing/understanding, took the bait! And caused me all kinds of trouble!

I hope you can make sense of it all(too much) but I believe I finally fixed it.
