Unable to configure my Gmail account on Mozilla Thunderbird on Ubuntu 14.04. Login Attempt Failed.

I tried configuring my Gmail account on Thunderbird, but Error Message #1: Username or Password incorrect.

Then I looked up for solutions, and tried this configuration

Incoming: POP3 Server hostname: pop.googlemail.com Port: 995 SSL: SSL/TLS Authentication: Normal Password

Outgoing: SMTP Server hostname: smtp.googlemail.com Port: 465 SSL: SSL/TLS Authentication: Normal Password

Username: My_username (with and without @gmail.com).

Error Message #2: Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server imap.googlemail.com responded: Web login required: https://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?answer=78754

What should I do now?

This response says that either the password or username is incorrect OR incorrect for the settings you have selected.

User Name = full emaill address

The error message mentions IMAP, but you are using POP settings.

Logon to your webmail account using a browser. Check what is selected: POP or IMAP forwarding. You can change what server type you wish to use. I believe that POP is not selected and you have tried to set up a POP mail account. If you want to use POP in Thunderbird, then that option must be selected in the webmail account. The Gmail error message seems to expect you to use IMAP,

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • do not select 'Include account names'
  • click on 'Copy text to clipboard'
  • In this question on the forum, right click in a Reply text box and select 'Paste'.
  • You can edit/remove all the info on fonts and printers, but nothing else.
