A whole batch (many months) of emails have disappeared from inbox

They tried the "repair folder" option and it didn't help.

They do frequent manual backups by copying the Profiles folder to another disk. Can that be used somehow to restore the missing messages, perhaps by restoring the applicable file? (How to determine which file to restore? They have about 3-4 email accounts in Tbird).

I have this problem plus I don receive emails at all. Correction: I think I do receive emails but they do not come to my Mozilla thunderbird screen.
