How does one start or respond to a a chat message in Thunderbird: there appears to be no means to do so.

I find you can start a chat by double-clicking your correspondent in the left pane; the middle pane changes into a window showing the chat, with your entry box at the bottom.

I don't use chat much and therefore don't have any past conversations to work with, so I can't help with how to reply.
