Since upgrading to Windows 10, when downloading a video from youtube or any other site, video works but there is no audio. I have updated all the extensions, restarted in safe mode, made sure quicktime, realplayer, flash were enabled and can't get any sound. Opera and Edge work fine. What to do other than switching to Opera?

check this:

  • see if there are updates for your graphics drive drivers

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)

  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

I tried all of the things suggested. I have Nvidia drivers and the website claims I'm up to date. I disabled protected mode and hardware acceleration in Flash, to no avail. I have put realplayer on "ask to activate" and I downloaded HTML5 for Youtube and that now works but still can't get sound on anything that needs flash (ooyala player). I have a 64 bit win 10 OS, just upgraded from win 7 on a Dell e6410 I7. This has been very frustrating as I'm probably missing something but don't know what.

I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

Is there an HTML5 media player used or a Flash based player?

You can check that via the right-click context menu of the player area.

Any media related error messages in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer)?

The videos with no sound are Flash. Right click shows ooyala.js wanted.

The only error I see in the console is a "ReferenceError: McGallery is not defined". This is on a video at denverpost.com/broncos . It's the Sportshow, about halfway down the page.

The HTML5 media player seems to work with youtube after I downloaded it. Before the download, Flash wouldn't run any youtube videos either.

The Sports Show video opens for me a pop-up with the HTML5 media player (video tag).

If you use extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Firefox is already in the default theme. Starting in Safe Mode, disabling everything has no effect on the audio portion of tha video.
