the bookmarks side bar keeps opening and closing by its self, I have run safe mode, disabled every thing, run virus scans, cussed at it, laughed at it and screamed at it, all to no avail.

I am running Windows 10 

AMD FX 4100 Quad- Core 3.6 GHZ

8.00 GB ram 64-bit ops, x 64 x based processor

and I have just updated to the latest version of Firefox 45

the bookmarks side bar keeps opening and closing by its self, I have run safe mode, disabled every thing, run virus scans, cussed at it, laughed at it and screamed at it, all to no avail. The shortcut key for the bookmarks sidebar is Ctrl+B, so make sure that you do not press this key combination.

Create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
