What is the function/use of "Username"?
There seem to be three different ways for me to identify myself 1) email address, 2) Username, 3)Displayname. Is Username a functional equivalent of email address or of Displayname, or is it something different entirely or what? in other words, what is the benefit of setting it to me? to Firefox/Mozilla? to other user? to someone else? I am puzzled

Many websites can use either of these to identify you when you log in. Some, however, will only take one or the other.
User Name is the name you choose for that site. Display Name is what other users see as to your name display.
