So, whenever I go to websites(like someecards, etc) and there are embedded images from Instagram, I can't see the pictures, only blank squares with a clickable description underneath it. I can view the pix fine on Instagram(or sometimes if someone shares Instagram pix on FB, I can see them fine there, too.) Just not embedded.

Any help would be appreciated!

"Can't view instagram pictures embedded in websites."

I did get this same problem over an year ago, in 2014. I just could not find any solution. No matter how much I updated the latest Firefox versions, Java-versions, video driver versions etc. I just used IE 11 browser when I needed to see those embedded Instagran pictures.

My current Firefox version is 50. Now I finally found a solution that seems to solve this problem in Win-XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Go to Tools -> Options -> Content -> Fonts and Colors / Advanced There tick the selection: "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

That's it. Now Instagram pictures show again as they should.

It would have made more sense to me if the setting had been: "Allow pages to choose their own colors..." and then that would have corrected the proble,

But allowing the font change, how did that correct this Instagram problem?

Hopefully this helps someone else with same kind of Firefox/Instagram problem.

Good to know I'm not the only one who's having this issue! I am seriously considering an alternative for firefox.

I would not even know how to find instagram pictures on http://www.someecards.com/ but when I open that I do not see any obvious missing images.

Weird, ain't it? But I've thought of switching to some other browser, myself.. -_-

Glad to hear it, but I'm needing a solution...it's kinda been frustrating, you know?

Thanks tho..

Can you give me some specific example please so I can check. Your screenshot indicated what your problem is but does not say what particular page it was on.

For prime example: take this article https://www.buzzfeed.com/caitlinjinks/what-is-happening?utm_term=.xvxPxaMQN#.flWaj5PLQ I am attaching the images, capture 1 is what I am supposed to see (via chrome). capture 2 is what I see on firefox. It just doesn't load for whatever reason. This just started happening too.

Thanks. I have checked that page and can see it somewhat similar to as you see it on Google. It does not seem to be protected content but it does need javascript that you could be blocking. Does it work for you in Firefox's safe mode ? Do you have script blockers or ad blockers that could be preventing you seeing this. What happens if you try looking at the Instagram site does the video clip play ok for you over there ?

Using the example link John99 posted...

The embedded Instagram pages are in iframes (inline frames). If you right-click that area, does Firefox's context menu have a "This Frame" item and if you follow that fly-out menu, can you open the framed page in a new tab successfully? Example screen shot attached for reference.

(I'm not saying you'll need to do this from now on, but I want to make sure the frame is being set up in the page.)

No, it doesn't. The only way to view the pix for me is to click the link below the individual pictures. Not that much trouble to do, but I just wish I didn't have to.

Here's a webpage example, btw- Example page on someecards...

Guess I'll just live with it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wow, I do so little with my hair it's hard to imagine...

Did you try making "exceptions" on the page, for example, using the Adblock Plus button, or turning off other extensions that can block content?

Or did you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

I have this problem too, on FF45.01, for instance here, with AdBlock OFF: https://www.instagram.com/developer/embedding/ The example doesn't display. You can look at the Source on it but for an amateur it's no help. Safe Mode might help but who wants to track down an offending extension via elimination just for this? Another fact, for me on Windows 7, not only FF fails, but MSIE11, Opera 41x, and SlimBrowser 8. The only browser that displays these reliably for me is Maxthon 4.9.4. But FF is my default for many good reasons. MAKE IT SO, DATA.

p.s. yes, clicking the text under the embedded brings up the intended image. HUMBUG!

Hi rootazoid, when you say it's the same problem, do you also get the photo placeholder with the caption underneath? In other words, the framed content loads, but there is a problem internal to the frame that causes it to load incompletely. But loads fine on Instagram itself?

I can't figure out what causes that. Since it affects nearly all your browsers, maybe it's a setting in your security software.

more options

What I get is a big empty framed white area, as if the old normal html called for an image that isn't there/uploaded, with a small camera-like icon in the middle. "Placeholder", maybe, incomplete, definitely. Clicking the caption brings up an Instagram page, yes, with the full image, for me in a new tab. If this was a security software issue, for me an alert would come up, and why would Maxthon sneak by and work?

more options

Hi rootazoid, I can't think of a setting that gives you that problem. Given that it happens in such diverse program, I think it must be something outside of Firefox. If you think it could be something inside Firefox, at least do the Safe Mode test so there aren't a billion possible things going on.

See also my answer in this thread:

I also see a problem with the Instagram video.
This also happens on the Instagram website
If I right-click that blank space then I always see a link selected that seems to overlay the actual video.
If I use the Inspector to give that element a rule display:none; or opacity:0 rule then I see the video.
This element seems to block the content and isn't transparent.

Some content shows a Content unavailable error message for me.

Oh my goodness, it worked! o_O Thanks! :)

Setting "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" would only have effect for images that are supplied by an icon font. That are usually small images in buttons or labels.

I'm not sure what that icon font means there. All the embedded Instagram videos and images that I have seen have had very much the same looking and same sized fonts and borders etc.

Here's for instance the official Instagram site that tells how to add embedded images to your web sites. https://www.instagram.com/developer/embedding/

If you test by checking/unchecking the "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" setting, image will be shown or disappears after refreshing the page.

I think most of the sites that use embedded Instagram images use this code snippet, and also the fonts that come along with it. So this Firefox/Instagram problem is with every user who has unchecked that setting.

If I check it back, I get blurry screen fonts on many pages. Hopefully this little FF-bug will be corrected within month or two.

I'm not sure what you mean, but jokke20's solution worked for me, so.... problem solved, I'm a happy camper again!
