Create a new Thunderbird message in a tab instead of a new window

When using Thunderbird, and clicking on Write to compose a new email message, the compose area opens as a new window. Since existing messages open as tabs, I would like a new compose area to also be a tab instead of a window. Is that possible, and if so how?

Thanks for your quick response. After I posted my question, I found that this same request goes back several years, and for various reasons, doesn't appear that it will ever be implemented.
