I've read the instructions on the help section and notice that I have three versions of the file it says to examine for access:

places.sqlite places.sqlite-shm places.sqlite-wal

None of these are read only.

Is there a way to fix the constant loss of bookmarks?

Using FF on Windows 66.0.2 64b

The places.sqlite file contains your History and Bookmarks.

What about the rest of your profile? history, settings, passwords . . . .

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP- in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most recent 7 - 10 Submitted crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box and paste them in.

Thanks, I have submitted an April and a May crash report.

Does Firefox create JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder?

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

If these backups are missing or not recent then Firefox isn't able to recover from problems with places.sqlite.

You have quite a few extensions in this profile, so maybe consider to try a new profile to see if that profile has less crashes.

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that start with "bp-".

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the report ID of recent crash reports on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page.

  • click the "All Crash Reports" button on this page to open the about:crashes page and see all crash reports.

Alternatively you can open about:crashes via the location/address bar.

This problem is still recurring. I can't even save bookmarks most of the time. Those I do manage to save just disappear.

This is what my bookmarks backup folder looks like:

That screenshot shows a steady increase in the number of bookmarks saved, so you should be able to restore a backup to restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup.

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

Do you have recent crash report? Maybe it is possible to do something about the crashes.

It's become apparent that the bookmark failure comes about when FF crashes.

However, FF only ever crashes when I exit the programme. That's the only time I get the crash report box, which I always tick.

I've been playing around with add-ins on and off, and so far can't find a pattern.

Give us the crash report number as per our instructions. We can't stop the crashes without knowing their cause.

Try to clear "offline website data" once in Firefox. Remove the checkmark on all items except "offline website data" and set the time range to "everything".

I always click on the SEND button when the programme crashes. Because I have already done it at the time there is no record in about:crashes of this week's crashes.

And now FF is being removed from all of our work computers as it's considered a threat to security so I guess it's not going to be a problem for thousands of people soon.
